The Ohio Department of Education has mandated that all current seniors pass the Ohio Graduation Tests to graduate. Juniors and Seniors who have not passed portions of this test will be given the opportunity to take the OGT the week of October 25th through October 30th.
COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
At this time, seniors should begin applying to colleges. As a general rule, applications should be completed by December 1st. If there is a counselor information page, students must bring it to the guidance office for--------------- to complete. The guidance office will handle all of the mailing of transcripts/ACT scores.
CAMPUS VISITS
To increase the likelihood of a good college-student match, students along with their parents should visit the college campuses that they are interested in. A poor match may contribute to the dropout rate among college freshmen.
Shadyside High School seniors who would like to visit a college campus during the school day must make arrangements through my office at least 1 week in advance. After the visit is arranged, students must turn it a College Visit Request to the office. Seniors are permitted 2 college visits per year and juniors are permitted 1 visit per year.
QUALIFYING FOR COLLEGE ADMISSION
A college preparatory curriculum should include the following courses for admission:
- English 4 Credits
- Math 3 Credits (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II)
- Natural Science 3 CreditsSocial Studies 3 Credits
- Foreign Languge 2 or more Credits
- Art 1 Credit
- Computer Tech 1 or more Credits
- ACT/SAT At least once by spring of junior year.
All students are encouraged to exceed the minimum number of college preparatory credits required for admission. Students who choose a rigorous high school curriculum will more likely be successful in college.
STUDENT ATHLETES
If your student is planning to participate in NCAA Division I or II athletics, he/she will have to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at ncaaclearinghouse.net. A transcript and ACT scores will be sent to the NCAA Clearinghouse at the time the student registers. A final transcript will be sent in June.
